In Memoriam: Pope Francis

The Church mourns the death of our Holy Father Pope Francis, who passed from this world at 7:35 A.M., April 21, in his Vatican residence, the Casa Santa Marta. His death was the conclusion of a lifelong battle with respiratory illnesses dating from his youth; on the other hand, his being called home at Easter, during the Jubilee Year for Pilgrims of Hope, could be seen as a triumphant conclusion to a life dedicated to proclaiming the hope of the Gospel.

In his announcement of Pope Francis’s passing, Cardinal Kevin Farrell gave a simple, heartfelt testimony to the late Holy Father’s legacy: “His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.” (VaticanNews.va)

The Church throughout the world unites in prayer for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis, as well as for the college of cardinals, that the grace of the Holy Spirit may enlighten and guide them as they choose his successor. We look with trust to our risen Lord, who will ever watch over and bless His holy Bride.
